Playwright alternatives for web scraping

Compare Playwright alternatives for JavaScript-rendered pages, DOM extraction, browser sessions, language support and self-hosting costs.

Quick answer

For scraping JavaScript-heavy pages, compare Puppeteer in Node.js, Selenium with an existing WebDriver setup, or chromedp in Go. Nodriver and Camoufox offer Python browser options. Plan crawl queues, extraction and storage separately.

Playwright alternatives

Position 1

Node.js scrapers that need browser rendering and DOM access

browser renderingself-hosted
Pricing
The source-code license is separate from operating cost. Budget for browser runtime, crawl workers, hosting, proxies and maintenance; a paid hosted browser is a separate service.
Licensing
Source code: Apache-2.0. Check the linked repository license for its terms.
Features
Control Chrome and Firefox from JavaScript for page navigation, DOM evaluation and extracting rendered content. puppeteer-core can connect to an existing browser.
Tradeoff
Puppeteer can replace the browser-control part of a Node.js scraper. Plan your own crawl queue, retries, proxy integration and storage; changing browser libraries does not provide a managed scraping service.

Scrapers using WebDriver bindings and remote browser sessions

Pricing
The source-code license is separate from operating cost. Budget for browser runtime, crawl workers, hosting, proxies and maintenance; a paid hosted browser is a separate service.
Licensing
Source code: Apache-2.0. Check the linked repository license for its terms.
Features
Use WebDriver language bindings to navigate pages, locate elements and read their text or attributes. Selenium Grid can provide remote browser sessions; crawl scheduling and data storage are separate.
Tradeoff
Use Selenium when your scraping code and remote browser infrastructure already use WebDriver. Rework locators, content waits and session handling when migrating from a different API.

Go scrapers reading JavaScript-rendered pages through CDP

browser renderingself-hosted
Pricing
The source-code license is separate from operating cost. Budget for browser runtime, crawl workers, hosting, proxies and maintenance; a paid hosted browser is a separate service.
Licensing
Source code: MIT. Check the linked repository license for its terms.
Features
A Go library for automating Chromium through the Chrome DevTools Protocol, including navigation, DOM interaction, screenshots and evaluation.
Tradeoff
Use chromedp when embedding Chromium control in a Go scraper. It changes the language/API and does not replace a full crawl pipeline or provide Firefox/WebKit support.

Position 4

Python scraping workflows using Chromium and CDP

browser renderingself-hosted
Pricing
The source-code license is separate from operating cost. Budget for browser runtime, crawl workers, hosting, proxies and maintenance; a paid hosted browser is a separate service.
Licensing
Source code: AGPL-3.0. Check the linked repository license for its terms.
Features
Python automation of Chromium-based browsers through CDP, with asynchronous page and element operations.
Tradeoff
Nodriver is a Python/CDP browser option; crawl queues, retries, parsing and storage remain your responsibility. Review its code license and target-site requirements before using it in a scraping service.

Position 5

Python scrapers that need a Firefox-based browser

browser renderingself-hosted
Pricing
The source-code license is separate from operating cost. Budget for browser runtime, crawl workers, hosting, proxies and maintenance; a paid hosted browser is a separate service.
Licensing
Source code: MPL-2.0. Check the linked repository license for its terms.
Features
A Firefox-based browser with Python automation integrations and configurable browser fingerprints.
Tradeoff
Use Camoufox when a Firefox-based browser fits your Python scraper. Check browser packaging, API compatibility and licensing; configurable fingerprints do not guarantee access to any target site.

Where the alternatives differ

Pricing

These are reusable software projects, not equivalent hosted-browser subscriptions. Compare the cost of browser workers and crawl queues, infrastructure, proxies and maintenance. If you buy remote sessions, their service terms and usage fees are separate from these code licenses.

Licensing

Source code: Apache-2.0. Check the linked repository license for its terms.

Features

Compare the steps in your scraper: navigation, waiting for loaded content, extracting DOM fields, handling sessions and writing results. Puppeteer and chromedp expose browser-control APIs; Selenium uses WebDriver. Nodriver and Camoufox change the Python/browser integration. Crawl scheduling, retries and storage still need a separate implementation.

When to stay with Playwright

  • Keep Playwright when your scraper already relies on its locators, content waits and isolated browser contexts. Switching libraries means revalidating the fields extracted from your target pages.
  • Keep the current library when it reliably renders the target pages and extracts the required fields within your operating budget. A new browser API is not automatically a better scraping pipeline.
  • Before migrating, compare a representative set of target pages and required output fields; keep the existing scraper until navigation, sessions and extraction behave as expected.
